Flickr was pretty easy to set up. One thing that's concerning me is how much information is required for setups. Why would they need my birthday as a required field. Most underage kids are savvy enough to lie about the year. My facebook account keeps telling me my profile is lonely and requests more information. What do site/service owners do with this data anyway?

To be honest, I don't know what do with the information... other than demographics. I don't think it has to do with keeping kids out as there isn't a minimum age that I can find. Major players, like Flickr, seem to being doing a good job at earning the trust of their users.

Personally, I don't give a second thought to giving basic information to well-known sites like these. Am I in the minority? What about everyone else?

I leave as much blank as possible and tend to lie about specifics (esp. name and exact birthdate). Why help the marketers (or anybody else) know more about me?
All these companies get purchased by larger ones. While Flickr may be owned by a company like Yahoo!, myspace was purchased by Newscorp. Who is going to buy Facebook? Still to be determined.
It is likely there are some age controls in Flickr as there are groups with adult content.

I tend to come down on Bart's side of the personal disclosure spectrum. Unless it is for work, I never give accurate information.
